The braking system has an electronic controller (30,32,34) which connects an auxiliary electric machine (14) coupled directly to the engine flywheel so it operates in generating mode when the brake pedal (24) is operated by the driver. The generator output is connected to the vehicle battery (26), and the slowing effect is transmitted to the vehicle wheels (20).
