PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a spacer with which a liquid crystal display device having high quality display performance can be obtd. without giving adverse influences to the liquid crystal such as disturbance in the alignment of the liquid crystal by controlling the elution volume of liquid crystal molecules expressed by a specified structural formula to a specified value or larger under specified conditions. SOLUTION: The spacer used has the following characteristics. When liquid crystal molecules expressed by formula II is made to flow through the system using the spacer for a liquid crystal display device as a stationary phase which packs a column and using a 1:1 mixture liquid of a liquid having 11 to 12.5 (cal/cm3) solubility parameter and water as a mobile phase, the elution volume of the liquid crystal molecules expressed by formula I is specified to >=3 mL under the conditions of N 100, wherein N is defined by N=16 (V/W)2, V is the elution volume of the liquid crystal molecules expressed by formula II and W is the peak width (min) of the liquid crystal molecules expressed by formula II. If the elution volume is less than 3 mL, the function to prevent abnormal alignment against impact of the liquid crystal display device using the spacer for a liquid crystal display device is sometimes not sufficiently developed.
