PURPOSE: An active matrix liquid crystal display and a method of fabricating the same are provided, in which pixel electrodes are patterned using self alignment to make a distance between a pixel electrode and a data line uniform over the entire pixels. CONSTITUTION: In a liquid crystal display constructed in such a manner that a plurality of gate lines(31L) and a plurality of data lines(35L) intersect to each other to define a plurality of pixels, a switching element is formed at the intersecting point of the gate line and data line of each pixel, and a pixel electrode is formed at the switching element, the distance between one side of the pixel electrode of each pixel and the side of the data line adjacent thereto is less than 1 micrometer. To obtain this distance, the back side of a substrate(300) on which the data lines are formed is exposed to pattern the pixel electrodes through self alignment.
