PURPOSE: A method for handing off a supplemental channel in a mobile communication system is provided to variably allocate an added supplemental channel relating to a base station having a big pilot strength of a fundamental channel to perform a minimum hand-off, so as to prevent wireless resource consumption and to minimize influences on existing subscribers. CONSTITUTION: A mobile station measures forward pilot strength of a serving base station and a target base station, and reports the strength to base stations. A base station controller(BSC) decides the forward pilot strength, respectively, and requests allocations of added supplemental channels(SCHs), then decides whether the SCHs are allocated to fundamental channels(FCHs) of base stations included in an active set. If the SCHs are not allocated, the BSC allocates the SCHs to a base station having an FCH which has a biggest pilot strength. If the SCHs are allocated, the BSC compares pilot strength of an FCH which does not allocate the SCHs with pilot strength of an FCH allocated with the SCHs. If the pilot strength of the FCH is bigger than the pilot strength of the FCH allocated with the SCHs, the BSC decides whether the pilot signal of the FCH allocated with the SCHs is over a preset T_ADD(add threshold value). If so, the BSC allocates the SCHs to the both FCHs. If the pilot strength is not over the preset T_ADD, the BSC allocates the SCHs to the FCH which does not allocate the SCHs, and cancels the SCHs for the FCH allocated with the SCHs, to perform handoff of the SCHs.
