Position determining device for passenger or goods lift has optical sensors which detect stop position and travel distance coding patterns

A lift cabin travels along a path comprising several stop positions at various floors. Travel distance code patterns are provided in the lift shaft along the path, and can be detected by optical sensors coupled to the cabin. Each stop position has an individual stop position coding (H). In the lift shaft, travel distance coding (W) patterns are used between the stop position coding patterns. The travel distance coding may be a periodically repeating pattern. The coding patterns may be bar codes.
