PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower the data non-reproducible ratio after retrial by overwriting for every byte data an ECC block on a memory for only byte data judged to include no error from error detection information outputted to data not fulfilling a demodulation rule at retrial. SOLUTION: A demodulation circuit 81 converts 16-bit data from an A/D conversion circuit 4 in to byte data on the basis of an EFMPlus modulation rule. An this time, 16-bit data not fulfilling the rule are made optional byte data and outputted with an error detection signal to an EMIF 84. The EMIF 84 stores the byte data into a RAM 85. An ECC circuit 83 corrects error to an ECC block on the RAM 85. If the error correction is impossible, a microcomputer 7 makes a servo circuit 6 read out a necessary ECC block again from an optical disk 1. At this time, the EMIF 84 overwrites and updates the ECC block for every byte with reference to the error detection signal from the modulation circuit 81.
