PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium high in coercive force and S/N ratio, low in PW50 value and satisfying heat fluctuation resistance. SOLUTION: A seed layer 2, an underlaid layer 3, an intermediate layer 4, a first magnetic layer 5, a nonmagnetic layer (crystal grain control layer) 6, a second magnetic layer 7, a protection layer 8 and a lubricating layer 9 are successively laminated on a glass substrate 1. The nonmagnetic layer 6 is formed from an alloy containing Cr and C and the magnetic layers are formed from the alloy containing Co and Pt.
