PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily perform a series of processes for character recognition by providing steps for rotating image data in the positive direction, cutting characters out of the rotated image data, recognizing the cut characters, and outputting the result of the character recognizing process, etc. SOLUTION: It is decided whether the decision result of the direction of the image data is positive (S304). According to the decision result of the direction decision part, the image data are so rotated that the direction of the image data is positive (S308). An area discriminating process is performed for the rotated image data (S310). Further, characters are cut out of the discriminated text area and recognized to obtain character data (S312). The character recognition result is outputted to an output part (S314). When the image data are in the positive direction, the character recognizing process is performed only once by this method, so a series of processes for character recognition can speedily be performed.
