PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an achromatic display high in contrast and high in lightness. SOLUTION: A normally black(NB) mode reflective liquid crystal display device 1 comprises a liquid crystal cell having a supertwisted nematic(STN) liquid crystal layer 9, a first optical retardation plate 4, a second optical retardation plate 3 and a polarizing plate 2 successively arranged on the one surface side of the cell and a reflection layer 15 constituting the other surface of the cell and arranged inside the cell. The product of birefringence and thickness of the liquid crystal layer 9 ΔnLc.dLC, the product of birefringence and thickness of the first optical retardation plate 4 Δn1.d1 and the product of birefringence and thickness of the second optical retardation plate 3 Δn2.d2 are selected within ranges 660 to 830 nm, 120 to 240 nm and 300 to 430 nm respectively. The twist angle χ is selected within 220 to 260 deg. range. Specified angles θ, ϕ and ψ are selected within ranges -130 to -75 deg., -20 to -60 deg. and -15 to -45 deg. respectively. |
