TWO TIER ADAPTIVE RANDOM PROTOCOL

PURPOSE: A communication system is provided to increase the rate of data processing by adequately varying the number of mini slots within a data frame. CONSTITUTION: A communication system includes a receive means for receiving a downstream data frame consisting of range parameters(R0 and R1), and a mini slot parameter(MAP) defining new message and old message mini slots(MS) and MS1) for subsequent downstream data frame. A transmit parameter generating means generates a transmit parameter(N1) within the range defined by the range parameter(R1) if a receiver has a resent old message reservation request and generates a transmit parameter(N0) within the range defined by the range parameter(R0) if the receiver has a transmitted new message reservation request. A transmitting means transmits the old message reservation request within the mini slot of the upstream data frame if the transmit parameter(N1) corresponds to one of the old message mini slots(MS1) and transmits the new message reservation request within the mini slot of the upstream data frame if the transmit parameter(N0) corresponds to one of the new message mini slots(MS0).
