PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head having high durability and high heat radiating performance, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: This magnetic head 10 is a magneto-resistance effect type to be mounted on the rotary drum of a helical scanning type magnetic recording/ reproducing device using a magnetic tape as a recording medium, and this magnetic head 10 is also a shield type having a magneto-resistance effect element 4 covered with a shield 8, a joining surface thereof with a guard material 1b being made flat. Since a dent formed after the formation of a magnetic shield film is removed by grinding and the magnetic shield is flat, durability and heat radiating performance are enhanced.
