PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader where an original can be pressed on an original platen nearly uniformly, independently of the thickness of the original. SOLUTION: This image reader 1 consists of a reader main body 10, having a stage glass plate 12 and a scanner mechanism section 21 and of an original cover unit 30 having 1st mobile spindles 32, 33 2nd mobile spindles 34, 35, a 1st release lever 41 and a 2nd release lever 42. The engagement between the 1st mobile spindles 32, 33 and the reader main body is released by the operation of the 1st release lever 41, and the original cover unit 30 is opened/closed around the 2nd mobile spindles 34, 35 and the engagement between the 2nd mobile spindles 34, 35 and the reader main body is released by the operation of the 2nd release lever 42, and the original cover unit 30 is opened/closed around the 1st mobile spindles 32, 33.
