PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the data transfer efficiency in consideration of the relative throughput between two devices. SOLUTION: In regard to the negotiation where the image processing functions are exchanged between two devices which communicate with each other via a bidirectional communication link, these devices mutually exchange the modules of device classes including the information on their relative processing capability (S702). Then the devices mutually exchange the description of function codes including the information on the functions available to both devices respectively (S704), and the devices negotiate the assignment of functions between them in order to improve the transfer efficiency of image data (S705-S707). Then it is decided whether the exchange of functions is necessary (S709). If the exchange of functions is necessary, each device transfers its function in an executable code form (S710). Thus, the image data are transferred via the assignment of functions including the function that is transferred from one of both devices to the other negotiated between the devices (S711).
