PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the shape of an entire device from getting larger and to easily and surely improve the deterioration of contrast caused by black floating by arranging a phase difference board on a side on which illuminating light by a color separating and synthesizing means is made incident. SOLUTION: The phase difference board is arranged on the side on which the illuminating light by the color separating and synthesizing means is made incident. The phase difference board 42 is arranged between a dichroic mirror 12 and a polarizing beam splitter 11 being on the light source side of the mirror 12 in this projection type display device 41. The phase difference boards 43B, 43R and 43G are arranged on the mirror 12 side of respective reflection type liquid crystal panels 14B, 14R and 14G. The boards 43B, 43R and 43G are arranged to negate a phase difference given to the illuminating light and video light when they are transmitted through dichroic mirror films MB and MR. The board 42 is set to give the phase difference to the illuminating light and the video light so that the direction of polarization of incident light and emitted light may be symmetric with respect to a Y-axis.
