PURPOSE: A power train is provided to compact an automatic transmission by reducing a number of planetary gear sets and friction elements. CONSTITUTION: A first clutch(C1) is installed between a planetary gear(9) of a single pinion planetary gear set and a ring gear(11) of a double pinion planetary gear set. A second clutch(C2) is installed between a ring gear(13) of the single pinion planetary gear set and the ring gear(11). A third clutch(C3) is installed between a linear gear(15) of the single pinion planetary gear set and a planetary carrier(19) of the double pinion planetary gear set. A linear gear(21) of the double pinion planetary gear set is fixed in a transmission housing(23). The linear gear(21) and the planetary carrier(19) are variably connected by a first brake(B1). A fourth and a fifth clutches(C4,C5) are installed between an input shaft(1), the linear gear(15) and a planetary carrier(9) of the single pinion planetary gear set. The linear gear of the double pinion planetary gear set is stopped by the brake device at an advance fifth level. The entire double pinion planetary gear set is stopped by the brake device at the advance fifth level and a reverse shift level. Thereby, the automatic transmission is compacted and the loss of power is minimized.
