PURPOSE: A multi-state thermostat is provided to prevent the sudden cooling of an engine by gradually reducing change amount of opening and shutting the thermostat according to the increase in the temperature of cooling water, thereby preventing the durability of the engine from being lowered. CONSTITUTION: A multi-state thermostat includes a coupling part(3) formed at the end part of a sleeve(10) with a spiral part(2) formed at the outer peripheral surface of the sleeve having a damping space(1) upward from the lower end part, a piston(5) inserted into a moving space with embedding a spring(4), an opening and shutting time control element having an inflow port(8) and a cap(7) coupled with the coupling part for applying expansion pressure of wax to the piston, so that the expansion pressure of the wax is partially received by the movement of the piston for controlling the opening and shutting time of a valve.
