PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for discriminating lump coal by a high frequency are provided to precisely and automatically discriminate lump coal into normal coal and waste coal containing floatstone regardless of shape by comparing voltage change according to a change of frequency of a resonance circuit. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for discriminating lump coal by a high frequency includes a high frequency generator(10), a resonator(70) for resonating a high frequency signal induced from the high frequency generator, a high frequency detector(20) for detecting a frequency change according to carbon content of lump coal(80) passing through the resonator, a voltage comparator(30) for comparing a voltage change according to the frequency change with a reference voltage, a reference voltage generating element(40), a solenoid driving part(50) for turning on or off a discriminating plate(55) according to the voltage change, and a timer(60) for setting an operation time of the solenoid driving part.
