PURPOSE: A half pixel motion vector extracting apparatus is provided to perform a half pixel calculation with regard to field and frame prediction by making the half pixel calculation be performed independently of a full pixel calculation, and to be capable of being applied to a full-pixel motion estimation processor of a full search block matching algorithm. CONSTITUTION: A parallel adder(120) and a minimum block distortion detector(130) generate a frame, a field and a 16 by 8 motion vector of a full-pixel accuracy. A best matched block distortion int-pixel extractor(210) performs a half pixel calculation and stores minimum block distortion data around a 16 by 16 reference block at a previous frame. A half pixel generator(180) receives an output of the best matched block distortion int-pixel extractor to generate a half pixel. A half pixel block distortion accumulation controller(230) generates eight half pixel block distortion accumulation control signals according to each mode of operation. A half pixel block distortion calculator(190) receives reference block data and half pixel data to calculate eight half pixel block distortion. The second search data selector controls a search data flow of the extractor(210). A reference block saver(220) stores reference block data necessary for calculating the half pixel block distortion. A half pixel minimum block distortion detector(200) compares the eight half pixel block distortion with a full pixel block distortion to generate a minimum block distortion and a half pixel accuracy motion vector.
