A device for use in surgical procedures involving arthroplasty. The device includes a socket member (10) having a first surface (21) and a second bone engaging surface (20). The first surface (21) has a bearing surface (25) adapted to receive a counter-component of a joint such as the head of a femur (40) (or prosthesis thereof). The bone engaging surface (20) includes a first, preferably frusto-conical, portion (11) and a second portion preferably comprising a spherical section (12).
