Sulfonated arylphosphines are prepared in aqueous solution with a low free SO2 content by reacting arylphosphines with oleum, diluting the mixture with water and blowing an inert gas stream through the solution to remove free SO2. Process for preparing a sulfonated arylphosphine comprises: (a) reacting the arylphosphine with oleum, (b) diluting the sulfonation mixture with water, (c) leading an inert gas stream through the diluted sulfonation mixture until SO2 is no longer liberated and (d) further processing the solution in the usual way.
