<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display the remaining recording time of a recording medium with high accuracy in the VBR recording to take priority of image quality over others. SOLUTION: After image data from a camera section 103 receives data processing and rearrangement processing, the resulting data are subjected to DCT and quantization processing and converted to variable length coded data. The coded image data are recorded in a recording medium 11 via a buffer 115. In this case, a switch 118 is thrown to a position A to select a fixed quantization table 119 and the data are recorded at a variable bit rate VBR. A recording rate calculation circuit 120 calculates a recording rate of the recorded image data and a microcomputer 121 calculates a remaining recording time of the recording medium 117 on the basis of the calculated recording rate. Furthermore, the microcomputer 121 throws a switch 123 to a position B until a mean recording rate reaches a stable state so as not to display the remaining time as its control. When the mean recording rate is made stable and the accuracy gets higher, the microcomputer 121 throws the switch 123 to a position A so as to display the remaining time on a display device 124 as its control.</p> |
