A specific adjustment of the quality of image is carried out according to the setting made by the user. Irrespective of the preset value of the adjustment of the quality of image, the contrast is compensated maintaining the luminance at the central part of an area of a specific color larger than a predetermined size at an approximately constant value. The quality of image is adjusted by selecting one of filters having different frequency characteristics according to the preset value of sharpness adjustment and carrying out a filtering processing of the image by using the selected filter. The contrast of the image after the filtering processing is compensated by using a contrast compensation value correlated with the selected filter in advance.
