The method involves using a processing unit associated with a sensor that produces a first measurement signal characterising the valve position and fed to a peak value detector. The peak detector produces a second measurement signal. The measurement signals are sampled at predefined time intervals and the valve stroke derived from the sampled value, or the next sampled value, of the second signal when a predefined condition is fulfilled that depends on the sampled values of both signals.
