The method fits a thread at both ends with a needle. A station (50) selects needles from a bulk supply which are transported on conveyors (102,104) to a robot grab (108). This places them on precision indexing conveyor (106) to a rotary swaging table (150) for securing thread to needle after which the strength of the bond is tested (400). The thread is cut to length (300) before being fed to the automatic swaging station (200) and finally passed to a packing station (500).
