The specimen (2) is held between the jaws (3.1,4.1:3.2,4.2) of clamps (14,13). Whilst still maintaining their clamping force the jaws are allowed to float so that the axis (23,24) of the specimen lines up with the axis (19) along which the tensile force acts. This adjustment is effected by the bending forces created by the original misalignment
