The invention relates to a vacuum cleaner (1), comprising a housing (2), a suction unit arranged therein (3) and a suction line (29) which penetrates said housing (2) and which is connected to the suction side of the suction unit (3) by means of a dirt collector (8) and a separating device. The objective of the invention is to improve the degree of separation obtained and provide for a simple construction of said vacuum cleaner (1). To achieve this, the closed dirt collector (8) can be inserted into the housing (2) and is sealingly connected to the suction line by means of an incoming suction opening and sealingly connected to the suction side of the suction unit (3) by means of an outgoing suction opening (17), when placed in said inserted position. The dirt collector (8) is partially filled with a liquid (53), whereby a feed line extending from the suction opening to said liquid flows therein. Impact surfaces (35,21) are arranged above the level of said liquid and form a flow path which is diverted several times between between the surface of the liquid (54) and the outgoing suction opening (17) for the suction flow which is guided through the liquid.
