Oil-soluble copolymers (I) derived from hydroxy-functional ethylenically unsaturated monomers and ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing a hydrocarbyl group of at least 6 carbon (C) atoms are used to improve the lubricating properties of middle distillates containing less than 200 ppm sulfur. Oil-soluble copolymers (I) are used in amounts of 0.001-2 wt.% to improve the lubricating properties of middle distillates containing less than 200 ppm sulfur, where (I) have a melt viscosity of 10-2000 mPas at 140 deg C and a hydroxyl number of 10-300 mg KOH/g and comprise: (a) 10-70 mole% of units derived from vinyl esters, (meth)acrylate esters, mono- and diesters of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, alkyl vinyl ethers and/or alkenes having hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyalkenyl, hydroxycycloalkyl or hydroxyaryl groups; (b) 30-90 mole% of units derived from carboxylic acid vinyl esters containing at least 7 C atoms, (meth)acrylate esters of alcohols containing at least 6 C atoms, alkyl vinyl ethers with alkyl groups of at least 6 C atoms and/or olefins and vinylaromatics with chain lengths of at least 6 C atoms; and optionally (c) 0-40 mole% of units derived from acrylic acid, acrylates, vinyl esters, alkenes, aminoalkyl (meth)acrylates, aminoalkyl (meth)acrylamides, vinyl amides, aminoalkyl vinyl ethers, allylamine and/or vinyl-substituted heterocyclic compounds. An Independent claim is also included for a middle distillate fuel with a sulfur content of less than 200 ppm containing 0.001-2 wt.% (I).
