Then, nb of the viewing angle compensation members 5, 6 is in parallel with ny and their na and nc are inclined with an angle θ with respect to nx, nz around ny, nb. Absorption axes 25, 26 of the polarizing plates 2, 3 are in parallel with directions of principal indices of refraction na1, na2 of the viewing angle compensation members 5, 6 respectively and the directions of the principal indices na1, na2 are in parallel with and reversed to rubbing directions 27, 28. In the case phase difference of the liquid crystal layer 11 is 400-450 nm, phase difference of the viewing angle compensation members 5, 6 is 90-120 nm in the normal direction 31 and 15-25 nm in the plane 30.
