In the present invention there is disclosed an apparatus for producing carbon black and hydrogen by thermal decomposition of hydrocarbon gases, particularly methane in a thermal decomposition reactor (2) with a plasma torch (1) being provided with an inlet of hydrocarbon gases and an inlet of a plasma gas, whereby the thermal decomposition reactor (2) is provided with inlets (18a, 18b, 18c) for conducting gases and materials in thermal zones (18a', 18b', 18c') being performed in the thermal decomposition reactor (2) in the direction of the hydrocarbon gas flow for adjusting the carbon black physical properties. The apparatus is further provided with an outlet piping (3) for removing the decomposition product being formed by hydrogen and solid particles comprising carbon black, whereby the outlet piping (3) is provided in the decomposition product flow direction with heat-exchange apparatuses (19a, 19b) for exchange of heat among the decomposition products on one side and a feeding gas and/or plasma gas on the other side, further with a separation device (4) for separating coarse particles from carbon black and a filtering apparatus (7) for filtering carbon black particles of selected size and structure and their removal for further treatment, and an outlet (9) being connected with the plasma gas piping (11) and intended for exhaust of hydrogen.
