The present invention relates to a process for preparing 2-pyrrolidones by simultaneous reaction of maleic acid anhydride, ammonia or primary amines and hydrogen at elevated temperature and increased pressure in a liquid phase, whereby there is used a supported catalyst containing both palladium and rhenium in either metallic or bound form.
