PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a rare earth-activated alkaline earth metal fluorohalide-based phosphor having a high photostimulable light emission luminance and excellent in erasing and residual characteristics. SOLUTION: At least a part of a baking or a cooling step is carried out in a weakly oxidizing atmosphere and baking is then carried out while removing at least a part of a generated halogen gas at a temperature within the range of 500-950 deg.C to produce a rare earth-activated alkaline earth metal fluorohalide- based phosphor represented by the formula: (Ba1-a, MIIa)FX.bMI.cMIII.dA:xLn (MII denotes an alkaline earth metal; MI denotes an alkali metal; MIII denotes a compound of a trivalent metal; X denotes a halogen; Ln denotes a rare earth element; A denotes a metal oxide; 0<=a<=0.3; 0<=b<=2; 0<=c<=2; 0<=d<=0.5 and 0<x<=0.2) when mixing raw materials for the phosphor, preparing a raw material mixture for the phosphor, baking the raw material mixture for the phosphor and then cooling the resultant baked material.
