PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce stainless steel extremely small in the elution of metallic ions from the steel, free from contamination and deterioration caused by the metallic ions and high in safety as for tower tanks producing liq. foods such as cold soft drinks and alcoholic drinks, e.g. Sake (Japanese rise wine) and beer, vessels storing and carrying them and storage tanks for the cleaning solns. of semiconductor devices. SOLUTION: This steel has a compsn. contg., by mall, <=0.03% C, 0.1 to 0.6% Si, <=0.4% Mn, <=0.04% P, <=0.003% S, 20 to 35% Cr, 0.8 to 4.0% Mo and <=0.03% N, contg. 0.3 to 1.5% Cu according to circumstances and moreover contg. one or <= two kinds among 0.1 to 0.6% Nb, 0.05 to 0.5% Ti and 0.01 to 0.3% Al, in which the relation of Nb+Ti>=7(C+N)+0.15 is valid among these components, and the balance substantial iron with inevitable impurities and has a passive film in which Cr is concentrated into >=70 atomic %.
