PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparation of an alcohol derivative capable of affording an ester, acetal, ketal, ether or alkylglucoside in high yield and free from load for wastewater treatment. SOLUTION: This method prepares an ester, acetal, ketal, ether or alkylglucoside by carrying out a reaction of an alcohol and a carbonyl compound, alcohol, olefin, epoxy compound (excluding 2-4C vicinal alkylene oxides) or saccharides in the presence of (A) an aluminum alkoxide and (B) sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid. The method prepares glycidyl ether by reacting an alcohol andα-epihalohydrin in the presence of the above catalyst and then reacting the obtained ether with an alkali, and hydrolyzing the glycidyl ether to provide a monoalkylglyceryl ether.
