PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for olefin polymerization by blending a transition metal compound and a triazaether compound. SOLUTION: A transition metal compound of MXlLm (wherein M is Cr, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni; X is a halogen; L is an organic ligand; l and m are each 0-6) and a triazaether compound of the formula (R is H or a 1-20C alkyl; n is 1-3) are used. They are used with a trialkyl aluminum compound and an ionic compound containing a non-coordinative anion. The transition metal compound, the triazaether compound, a trialkyl aluminum compound and an ionic compound containing a non-coordinative anion can be added in any order at a polymerization or a reaction product obtained by blending these compounds before use can be used. Preferably a complex obtained by blending the transition metal compound and the triazaether compound before use is used.
