PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cationic polymerization process by which a desired polymer can be efficiently produced in one step without used of previous preparation of a catalyst and at the same time a polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution can be produced; and a catalyst for cationic polymerization for use in the process. SOLUTION: A cationic polymerization process which comprises polymerizing a cationic polymerizable monomer in the presence of a catalyst, wherein, as the catalyst, use is made of a compound having at least one proton generating group and at least one aromatic hydrocarbon residue, the aromatic hydrocarbon residue being substituted with at least two halogen atoms.
