PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new compound useful as a catalyst for efficiently providing a polymer having a narrow distribution of molecular weight by reacting a specific alkenyl compound with a specified benzoic acid derivative. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I (R1 is H, methyl or ethyl; R2 is an ether or a substituted aryl; n is 1-4; X1 to X5 are each H or a halogen, with the proviso that at least two of X1 to X5 are halogens). The compound represented by formula I is produced by reacting an alkenyl compound represented by formula II (e.g. ethyl vinyl ether or n-propyl vinyl ether) with a benzoic acid derivative in which at least two of hydrogen atoms on the benzene ring are substituted with halogen atoms (e.g. difluorobenzoic acid, dichlorobenzoic acid or dibromobenzoic acid), preferably at 0-150 deg.C.
