PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide wholly new data or service incapable of being expressed on printed matter to readers by utilizing a two-dimensional code. SOLUTION: A two-dimensional code 14 wherein digital data is converted to a dot pattern to be arranged on a two-dimensional surface is printed on a specified region having no informational meaning in printed matter and a reader extracts the printed region of the two-dimensional code from the image obtained by optically reading the printed matter containing the printing of the two-dimensional code 14 to reproduce the original digital data. As a specific region utilizable in the printing of the two-dimensional code, there is the fancy rule or ground tint character of a newspaper 12 and transmission data is printed as a fancy rule two-dimensional code 50 or a shading character two-dimensional code 64 to be reproduced.
