PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel consumption, drivability and emission performance of a fuel injection device. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine having an injector with an air assist, fuel is injected during intake strokes when air assist air by air assist function is provided, fuel is injected during exhaust strokes when air assist does not work and a systematic system with taking air assist amount, particle diameter and operating conditions into account is built. Atomization of fuel is optimized and exhaust gas characteristics, fuel consumption and drivability are improved by shifting the fuel injection timing from intake strokes to exhaust strokes based on air assist amount.
