PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of parts of an operating mechanism capable of fixing the whole length at an expansible or retractible, free state, and to make installation of the part on other device, etc., easier. SOLUTION: This gas spring is provided with a lever supporting part 52 formed close to a valve 11, a control lever 16 relatively movably held on the supporting part 52 and pressing and releasing the valve 11 by relative movement to switch it between free state and locked state, a fixing means, for example, locking part 18 for fixing the lever 16 so that the free state is maintained in a state where the valve 11 is pushed in by the control lever 16. The lever supporting part 52 is provided with a fulcrum side supporting part 13, a fulcrum hole 12 formed at the fulcrum side supporting part 13, an oscillating side supporting part 15, a switching part 17 formed at the oscillation side supporting part 15 and extending in the direction of the valve coming in and out, and an oscillation supporting hole 14 having a locking part 18 expanded laterally relative to the direction of the valve going in and out, at the end part of the switching part 17 on the side of the direction of the valve 11 pushed in.
