PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound free from halogen atom, excellent in heat resistance and properties for imparting flame retardancy, and capable of providing a sufficient flame retardance to a resin by mixing the compound with the resin, and useful as a flame retardant. SOLUTION: This new compound is the one of the formula [R1 and R2 are each a 1-10C alkyl; (a) and b are each 0-3; m is 1-9]. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting (A) an aryl phosphate dichloride, preferably phenyl phosphate dichloride or the like, with (B) an aryl phosphate, preferably phenyl phosphate, ordinary while regulating the amount of the component A so as to be 0.5-3 equivalents based on the component B, preferably at 100-250 deg.C for 3-10 hr. The compound can be formulated with a thermoplastic resin or the like such as a polyphenylene ether.
