PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in high yield by reaction of a carboxylic ester compound with a metal borohydride complex compound in the presence of methanol. SOLUTION: This compound of formula II is obtained by reaction of (A) a carboxylic ester compound of formula I [R1 is a (substituted) alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or the like; R2 is a (substituted) alkyl or aryl] (e.g. methyl 4- benzoylamino-2-cyclopentene-1-carboxylate) with (C) a metal borohydride complex compound (e.g. sodium borohydride, trimethoxysodium borohydride, dimethoxysodium borohydride, lithium borohydride) in the presence of (B) methanol pref. at -5 to 50 deg.C for 10 min to 24 h; wherein it is preferable that the molar ratios C/A and B/C are 1-10 and 0.5-200, respectively.
