PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ink jet recorder in which a wiping member can surely arrange the meniscus of ink uniformly at respective openings and can rub off foreign matters bonded to the nozzle forming plane. SOLUTION: The ink jet recorder comprises a slide member 46 reciprocating in parallel with the nozzle forming plane 94 of a recording head, a wiping member 36 supported on the slide member and pressed, on the free end side thereof, against the nozzle forming plane as wiping operation when moving in one direction and as rubbing operation for the nozzle forming plane when moving in the opposite direction, a part for supporting the base end part of the member 36 rotatably on the slide member, a spring 49 for supporting the wiping member being turned by receiving reaction incident to pushing action against the nozzle forming plane while urging, as it is, in the pushing direction during wiping operation, and means for supporting the wiping member while regulating rotation thereof during rubbing operation.
