PRODUCTION OF METHYL CHLORIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce methylene chloride while suppressing the byproduction of diethyl ether to reduce the disposal cost by using a step to form a gaseous mixture containing methylene chloride by contacting methanol with hydrogen chloride. SOLUTION: This process comprises (A) a step divided into at least two parts wherein the 1st part 4 comprises the formation of a gaseous mixture 12 containing methylene chloride by contacting at least stoichiometrical amount of methanol containing 60-95% of the methanol 8 added to a process with hydrogen chloride 2 in the presence of a 1st liquid medium 6 at 115-170 deg.C, (B) a step to contact the above gaseous mixture 12 with the 2nd methanol 14 and add the product to the 2nd liquid medium 16 at 100-160 deg.C and (C) a step to recover the produced methylene chloride.
