PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of achieving multi-color reproducibility by utilizing and combining area gradation and time gradation in terms of a printer using an LED print head. SOLUTION: This printer comprises a gradation processing circuit 8 consisting of a matrix generating circuit 8a and a light emission time control circuit 8b. Area gradation is executed by the matrix generating circuit 8a and time gradation is executed by the light emission time control circuit 8b. As both of the circuits 8a, 8b are combined, more gradation information can be used, thereby providing the printer capable of achieving multiple gradations. Particularly, if the above structure is adapted to a color printer, it is possible to achieve multi-color reproducibility.
