PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep the wiping power of a wiping member in an ink jet recorder at a high level over a long term. SOLUTION: A wiper for wiping off the nozzle forming plane of a recording head comprises a slide member reciprocating in parallel with the nozzle forming plane, and a wiping member 36 having free end side being pressed against the nozzle forming plane as wiping operation when moving in the going direction and as rubbing operation when moving in the opposite direction while being supported by the slide member. A wiping power recovery apparatus having a member 55 for removing ink from the wiping member 36 is provided immediately in the rear of a wiping operation range. The ink removing member 55 has a front face of such a shape as the wiping member 36 beings to touch gradually as the slide member is slid, as it is, in the wiping direction, and a rear face of such a shape as the wiping member 36 is removed at a breath when it is pressed against the front face and bent oppositely to the moving direction.
