PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound useful for production of silane and siloxane polymers including a homopolymer and a copolymer. SOLUTION: This new compound is the one of formula I (R1 and R2 are each chloro, a triorganosiloxy, an organoxy or the like; R3 is a monovalent hydrocarbon containing no conjugate aliphatic unsaturation, a triorganosilyl or H; R4 is a monovalent saturated hydrocarbon; with the proviso that when R3 is H, R1 and R2 are not the chloro and the organosiloxy), e.g. 1,1-dichloro-3- methyl-2-neopentyl-3-(2-trimethylsilylethynyl)-1-silacyclobutan. The compound of formula I is obtained by bringing a mixture comprising a compound of the formula R1R2ClSiCH=CH2 (R1 and R2 are each chloro or a triorganosiloxy) (e.g. trichlorovinylsilane) with a compound of formula II (R3 is a monovalent hydrocarbon containing no conjugate aliphatic unsaturation, or a triorganosilyl) into contact with t-butyllithium.
