PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a hit rate of a cache memory in a decoder for a variable length, such as an MH code that uses the cache memory by efficiently storing data to the cache memory. SOLUTION: This decoder for a variable length code uses the variable length code for an address to access a cache memory 8 to decode the code. In this case, the hit rate of the cache memory 8 can be enhanced by configuring the decoder, such that a mask circuit 9 masks other parts than the real code length of a tag stored in the cache memory 8 by using information in 3 bits which represent the remaining number of bits of the real code after '1' appeared first outputted from the cache memory 8, and a comparator circuit 10 compares the masked data with a code in 7 bits, after first appearing in one MH code for the discrimination of hit/mis-hit of the cache memory 8.
