PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply realize wide range of light receiving sensitivity, such as a biological net film and a high contrast detecting function in a semiconductor image pickup element, using a simple circuit configuration. SOLUTION: This semiconductor image pickup element is provided with a plurality of pixel circuits, each pixel circuit has photodetectors PD1 and PD2 and a resistor Ri, and the photodetectors PD1 and PD2 are connected in series via the resistor Ri. Each pixel circuit is connected to the adjacent pixel circuits via a resistor Rn in a connection mode 1 of the photodetector PD1 and the resistor Ri. Accordingly, after the voltage change in the connection node 2 of the photodetector PD2 and the resistor Ri have been amplified, it is extracted as an output signal.
