PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device for a 720p system to be a television standard for the successive scanning system of 1280 horizontal pixels and 720 vertical pixels by constituting the device of plural full pixel reading type solid state image pickup elements corresponding to a general VGA. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is constituted so that the numbers of vertical effective pixels of respective chrominance signals outputted from full pixel reading type solid state image pickup elements 3 to 5 corresponding to a VGA arranged so as to be shifted only by 1/2 horizontal and vertical pixel pitches are reduced to about 3/4 by using frame memories 305, 405, 505, converted with a time base, a high frequency luminance signal and the low frequency signals of respective colors are generated from respective chrominance signals and interpolation signals outputted from the memories 305, 405, 505, and a 720p type video signal is generated from the high frequency luminance signal and the low frequency signals of respective colors.
