PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head suitable for ultrahigh density magnetic recording by constituting at least one of the upper and lower cores from crystal grains consisting of a specified oxide and a specified oxide precipitated on the interfaces of the crystal grains. SOLUTION: At least one of the upper and lower cores of the magnetic head consists of a soft magnetic thin film which has soft magnetic characteristics and which is composed of crystal grains of one kind of oxide selected from cobalt oxide, iron oxide, chromium oxide and nickel oxide, and of at least one kind of oxide selected from silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, tantalum oxide and zinc oxide precipitated on the interfaces of the crystal grains. The structure of the crystal grains observed from the film surface shows a hexagonal honeycomb structure. The crystal grains are two-dimensionally and regularly arranged and the cross sectional structure of the crystal grains shows a columnar structure.
